One Hire Changed Everything

Every movement has an origin story.

For National Hire a Veteran Day, that story begins on July 25, 2012, when Marine veteran Dan Caporale met retiring Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Tim Kirk at The Deli in Quantico, Virginia.

Dan wasn't looking to create a national observance.

He was simply looking for the right person to help build something meaningful.

He made one decision.

He hired another Marine.

That single hiring decision led to the creation of Hire Our Heroes, helped thousands of veterans navigate the transition to civilian careers, and ultimately inspired National Hire a Veteran Day, officially recognized by National Day Calendar in 2017.

Today, the observance has grown into a nationwide call to action encouraging employers not only to hire veterans, but to develop, retain, and promote them.

The decision to hire Master Gunnery Sergeant Tim Kirk became the catalyst behind the movement.

It serves as a reminder that every veteran hired has the potential to strengthen an organization, and every employer has the opportunity to change a life.
